In the previous three posts, I have explored the spiritual dangers of abandoning our foundation. We looked at the invisible drift that pulls us away from Christ. We discussed the moment of exchange when cultural faith proves bankrupt. We examined the exhausting spiritual inflation that comes from relying on our own energy.
Now we reach the final and most important step. How do we return to the standard?
In economics, returning to a gold standard after years of floating currency requires immense discipline. It means restructuring the entire system to tie back to something solid. In our spiritual lives, the process is similar but infinitely more hopeful. We do not have to fix the whole system at once and we don’t have to convince other people. We just have to move our foundation back to the Rock.
The prophet Helaman understood the necessity of a solid backing. In Helaman 5:12, he gave a timeless formula for spiritual security. “And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation… a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.”
A foundation built on church culture, personal habits, or the opinions of others will eventually crack. Those things are shifting sands. The only material strong enough to withstand the pressures of mortality is Jesus Christ Himself.
President Russell M. Nelson echoed this exact warning and promise recently. He taught, “If you and I are to withstand the forthcoming perils and pressures, it is imperative that we each have a firm spiritual foundation built upon the rock of our Redeemer, Jesus Christ.” [Talk: The Temple and Your Spiritual Foundation]
This is the ultimate Gold Standard of the Gospel. When your testimony is permanently linked to the Savior, your faith does not lose value when the world panics. Your peace is secure. Your spiritual currency has infinite purchasing power because it is backed by the King of Kings.
The Practical Takeaway
Do a foundation inspection. Look at the structures of your life right now. Are they resting on the shifting trends of the world or on the solid reality of the Savior?
Build deliberately. True foundations are not poured by accident. Choose one specific way to connect with Jesus Christ this week. It could be a focused prayer, a trip to the temple, or a quiet moment of scripture study.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. Stop drifting. Stop running on empty. Return to the standard that never changes.
